Today's reports cover an FBI accusation against North Korea over a record crypto theft, new figures on the Middle East and North Africa crypto economy, and a losing week for Bitcoin and Ethereum.
A sector large enough to move hundreds of billions and lose billions to theft is also large enough to be held responsible for what it costs the planet.
According to the report, the FBI has accused North Korea of stealing more than $6 billion in virtual assets from the cryptocurrency exchange Binance. The report describes it as what is thought to be the biggest-ever crypto heist. No further details on the accusation are given in the report.
Sums of this scale show how much value the crypto sector concentrates, and how much of it is directed toward anything but repairing the natural world.

A blockchain analysis firm puts the Middle East and North Africa crypto economy at $443B, the report says. Within that, the United Arab Emirates was reported to have grown 32% to about $104.8 billion, outpacing regional growth. Türkiye remained larger at around $144.5 billion, according to the report.
Fast regional growth in digital assets raises the question of whether that expansion carries any environmental commitment alongside it.

The report says the crypto market ended the week of Oct 26-30 sharply lower. Bitcoin fell 4.7% from the Oct 23 close to US$77,369 on Oct 30, while Ethereum declined 5.9%. The outlet attributes the retreat to renewed concerns over US monetary policy, technology valuations and a reported security incident at Binance.
Prices move both ways, but the energy and resources behind the networks that produce them are spent regardless of the direction.

Forests do not recover on their own timetable, and the simplest thing any of us can do is commit to one tree and then see it through. If you want to take a concrete step today, make a pledge on the REFOREST pledge page. $REFOREST exists to tie take-profit milestones to planted trees: when a member hits a milestone, they pledge publicly, and the tree only counts once three community members have verified it — the registry stands at 0 verified trees so far.
